ALIEN SUIT

Dig these "behind-the-scenes" pics of
Tom Woodruff Jr
in the ALIEN suit!
(I love seeing stuff like this!)

Tom Woodruff Jr, along with partner-in-crime Alec Gillis, worked on the creature FX in ALIENS under Stan Winston. They then broke off and formed their own company, Amalgamated Dynamics, and worked on Tremors and ALIEN 3 (to name a few). During ALIEN 3, they not only created & redesigned the alien itself, but Woodruff went into the Alien suit. And there he's stayed, on Alien: Resurrection and AVP.

Personally, I'm not a fan of their Alien redesigns. Each movie the Alien desing gets tooled around with and by the time AVP came around, I felt the Alien was no longer the cool Bio-Mechanical creature I find gorgeous and perfect, but instead a Pumpkinhead-like creature. I wish they would return to the ALIEN and/or ALIENS desgin. With that said, though, they put together a pretty neat book detailing their creature work on AVP. The book is really quite awesome! I recommend it.

The trouble is with something as cool as the Alien it's always going to only work once,or twice at the most. The Borg in Star Trek were a nice idea when they first showed up,the 2nd time still quite spooky, the 3rd time not so hot,the fourth 'yawn' boring ! Freddy Kruger went the same way, first movie creepy and funny, the 2nd film he had become a caricature of himself. I don't think the Alien could ever really be as creepy as it was because we've all seen it far too much in films like Alien 3,Alien Ressurection,AVP and countless comics etc...

I think if shot and lit correctly, the Alien could once again be terrifying. Less-is-more definitely applies to this creature. It should always live in the shadows and quick cuts.
