Other WEREWOLVES in Picture Shows:
* DRACULA (Copolla): Cool were-dracula!
* UNDERWORLD: Cool physiques, but too feline in design. Overall, nice approach.
* SILVER BULLET: Stephen King. Wheel-chair bound Corey Haim. Nuff said.
* THRILLER Video: "I'm not like other guys..." No shit, freak.
* TEEN WOLF: Do I even need to say anything?
* MONSTER SQUAD: Wolm-Man's got nards!
* COMPANY OF WOLVES: Freaky transformations!
* VAN HELSING: Great trasnformation approach, semi-decent Werewolves. Movie is absolutely abyssmal, tho.

Wrap yer head in duct tape 'cause it's gonna explode when you read this!

Hollywood now proposes that in a new live-action movie based on the G.I. Joe toy line, Joe's -- well, "G.I." -- identity needs to be replaced by membership in an "international force based in Brussels." The IGN Entertainment news site reports Paramount is considering replacing our "real American hero" with "Action Man," member of an "international operations team."

Paramount will simply turn Joe's name into an acronym.

The show biz newspaper Variety reports: "G.I. Joe is now a Brussels-based outfit that stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, an international co-ed force of operatives who use hi-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil organization headed by a double-crossing Scottish arms dealer."

Yeah, I heard that, too. But surprisingly, I'm not upset by this. At first, yes. But I quickly became ok with it. Here's why....

In the 80s. "ACTION MAN" was what everyone else outside of America watched - it was the same GIJOE cartoon and toy line, but repackaged with the new name. The "new" name was from the 60s/70s toyline of the same name, which was also a renameing of the old original GIJoe toy line (the big figures).

Back to GIJoe... the first wave of Joes (80s version) were very U.S. Military in appearance. Everyone except Snake-Eyes was pretty much in standard green Army fatigues. But once the 2nd wave of figures came out, the entire look, feel and concept of GIJOE changed - it was no longer just a team of Americans fighting the good fight, but quickly became an international fighting force against Global Terrorism.

For most of its life, GIJOE has been the International operations team, so there's really no change. Yes, "A real American Hero" was still in the them song, but if you read the comics (which the tv show and toyline was based on), it was the Int'l organization.

Plus, while I believe there was an actual character named "GI Joe" in the original 60s line, the 80s line did not - "GIJOE" was the name of the organization, that's all.

I have no problem with this. They are still calling it "GIJOE" and the acronym now makes more sense, especially since Globalization is steamrolling ahead.

I will say, tho, that it is shame GIJoe will no longer be a symbol for the strength of America, but that is also a hard truthful reflection of our current state in the global community. Then again, what better way to improve that image than with GIJoe.

So while I don't hate it, I'm also not waving the flag of approval.

Besides, there's waaaay more pressing issues with this, namely that Stephen "Mummy/VanHelsing" Sommers is directing.

It's probably a blessing his movie will not be attached to America's image entirely. :)

That's a lot more G I Joe history than I realized...hmmm (he ponders)

But why is a Scot the bad guy?

Jim said...

The Scot in question is James McCullen XXIV, aka DESTRO!!
:)

I've heard that Cobra Commander will be like the Emperor in Star wars (orig)... you hear of him, you see the fear in people when his name is mentioned... and then see him later after his reputation has been established and he's larger than life already (sweet).
